Another weekly update

I've been considering mentioning that these updates are approximately weekly. That's sort of the intent. I have a list going of things I want to think through anyway, the writing process assists with the thought processing, and you my dear reader, have something to ponder or enjoy depending the piece of writing.

1. Who says you can't teach more than just language in an ESL environment?

One of the students in my adult class has a masters degree in physics. The class discussion started with where one might like to live. He mentioned at a space station and well, one thing led to another and it became very clear that an explanation of the theory of relativity was in order. This individual is usually a little quiet when it comes to more ordinary English language topics, but he did a great job explaining relative theory to the class. :) A great impromptu speech. I love it when I get an opportunity to direct class in such a way that learning beyond mere language practice occurs.

Something I wrote over two weeks ago, on my day of departure

Travel blog: Day 1

November 29, 2006 @ 6:00a.m. MST

Here is the first, and very possibly last entry considering just how good of a job I tend to do at regularly updating blogs of my year long working holiday/mini-masters degree/traveling experience.

I’m sitting here at the airport enjoying quality time in the semi-temperate area. Why on earth would anyone open the loading doors when it’s this intemperate out? Temperatures on the in-car thermometer showed -32C to -37C on the way over to the airport this morning. Needless to say, I’m wearing my toque indoors due to the ridiculous draft.

I packed as much as I could shove in two suitcases basically. At first I was concerned that I would have to pay an overweight fee. Now that the suitcases have been checked without even being weighed, I’m none too concerned. I intend to be a suit person, or at least a blazer person for my workdays upon arrival, we’ll see how that goes, especially considering I own all of one tie. I’ve never been a tie sort of guy though. Bright collared shirts and pinstripe suits will suit me quite well me thinks.

Being that I am still in Edmonton, there really isn’t much to say yet. I’ll continue this blog as I feel like it basically.

Highlights of the week

This week has been interesting to say the least. Anyway, highlights include applying for jobs. Real actual jobs. Not self directed fun employment opportunities. Of course self-employment is what I am doing at the moment simply because it's way more fun to list stuff on e-bay than to do school work! Check out the impressive pile of stuff! http://search.ebay.com/_W0QQfgtpZ1QQfrppZ25QQsassZerichw Ha ha, 24 items that I said I would sell some day. This will give me something to obsessively compulsively check all week... I'm hoping for at least $600. I have a seemingly endless supply of collectibles... Well, if I ever get to the bottom of it, I'll go to an auction. :)

I've found some really interesting jobs to apply for. Such as one that would involve cycling around the city of Edmonton and updating the Edmonton cycling map. Another, which I'm enthusiastic about is a job with Alberta Environment where I would get to be a policy Analyst, hence combining economics with environment. I never realized there were such interesting fun jobs out there! I've got my fingers crossed. A career in environmental economics... hmm, I could do that.

I'm in thought as of late realizing just how much I'm going to miss going to the UofA. Well, time marches on and I push ahead into my future. It's funny how I feel as if I'm on the crossroads of life. So few responsibilities, so many possibilities... It's quite wonderful really. I wish it were just a little less scary I suppose.

floating on a sea of sighs

what a lovely picture from this quiz.
well, the trip was alright, the first concert was awesome, i got some cool merchandise, the hotel that night in spokane was a scary dirtbag place... one lamp had no lightbulb, the other one had a smashed shade. the view from the window was the underside of a train bridge. the bathroom light burnt out with a zap while we were there. everything was dingey. then, on to seattle, where we visited the space needle and such, stayed at a much nicer place, but the concert got cancelled. bummer. then i did the driving home, 15 hours straight cuz the number 1 highway was shut down for a semi/4 car collision. long detour. but, fun anyways. now to fall into my work schedule, and i love my job sofar. get a car asap, probably 3-4 weeks from now. thats about it, and go flames go for tomorrow night!

You came from the water. Calm and shy, you know
what you want, but sometimes are afraid to
stand up for yourself.

Where did you come from?
